The ESP Ecocent, An innovative and extremely versatile integrated heat pump and water cylinder that operates as a standalone unit, or in conjunction with traditional or other renewable energy technologies.That means that no matter what your existing system is – you’ll be able to fit in an Ecocent and take advantage of its amazing efficiency and flexibility.

The unit operates by extracting waste heat/moisture generated within the building. This is our renewable energy source which is then converted & used to generate Hot Water. The Ecocent mainly uses electricity for two things – to run the fan and the compressor motors, but of course this is added to the ‘free’ energy taken out of the air to make the unit extremely efficient.

When the air in the room contains steam /moisture or heat – it contains even more energy, so the Ecocent becomes even more efficient.

The Ecocent has a COP (Coefficient of Performance) of 4:1

This is due to the fact that the Ecocent can extract 4 or more times more energy out of the atmosphere than the energy it takes to do so. As part of the process of conversion, the Ecocent produces a bi-product of free air cooling which can either be exhausted externally or used to lower the ambient temperature in any working environment.

This process provides the benefits of having a cooler working area or, if preferred, used to cool plant/machinery which can have a positive effect on the life span & maintenance of equipment.

Earth Save Products (ESP) were selected as finalists & given the opportunity to install the award winning ESP Ecocent unit into the main catering area at the Gogarburn Complex, Edinburgh.

The unit operates by extracting waste heat/moisture generated within the building. This is our renewable energy source which is then converted & used to generate Hot Water.

By installing 2 ESP Ecocent units to supply hot water directly to the dishwasher rather than a cold water supply we have reduced the demand on the electrical immersions therefore lowering the energy consumption.

As part of the Ecocents operational process, we are also dehumidifying/extracting waste heat & moisture from the dishwasher’s overhead canopy & delivering the Ecocents free bi-product of cool air back into the working area making it a more comfortable environment for the catering staff.

This Ecocent installation is effectively carrying out several key requirements all at the same time.

Case Study Results

Date of installation – APRIL 2016

Since the installation in April, electricity consumption has been monitored on both the Ecocent cylinders & the commercial dishwasher. The results are extremely positive and have already showed the Ecocent units are performing exactly as planned.

Electricity consumed by the dishwasher has been reduced by 108.4kWh per day. 108.4kWh x £0.10 = £10.84 saving per day / £3,804.84 per annum.

The Ecocent units produce the equivalent of 3kW of air cooling per hour. This has been factored into the energy savings as it is a Bi-product. The 2 Ecocent units therefore produce 6kW of cooling per hour over an average of an 8 hour cycle per day. 6kWh x 10hours =60, 60 x £0.10 per Kwh = £6.00 per day, £2,106.00 per annum.

Operational costs of the Ecocent units have been metered since the installation. The units operate by consuming 680watts of power per hour. There is a 1.5kw immersion back up inside the cylinder to offer 100% protection from legionella. This can raise the electrical consumption slightly during times of the day where the demand for hot water is at its peak.

The daily electrical consumption shown on the Meters have shown an average daily consumption of 9Kwh per Ecocent cylinder. 9Kwh = £0.90 per unit per day = £0.90 x 2 Ecocent’s = £1.80 per day x 351 days = £631.80 per annum.

Operational costs of the units: £631.80

Total savings (energy costs) £5,279.04

Total carbon savings the carbon savings from the ecocent installations are equal to the carbon emissions of 2 UK homes per annum (UK average)

TOTAL CARBON SAVINGS (rule of thumb- £1 electrical/gas savings = 5kg Co2). The installation and process of the project has reduced the Co2 emission’s by RBS at Gogarburn by 26 tonnes. ENERGY CONSUMPTION ON THE COMMERCIAL DISHWASHER ALONE HAS BEEN REDUCED BY 19-20%
